Nilanjan’s series displayed here ‘In search for a comfort zone’ is an ongoing project that focuses on gender interaction in the urban landscape and the politics between public and private space. He examines public space and various components it is composed of, such as social or legal rules, value systems, norms, functionalities, physical structure, even history of a place. Screen printing is one of the crucial medium in his practice as it gives freedom to print on any plain surface and can be used as a brilliant tool for public discourse, while the diverse possibility of printing photographic images in halftone is also there. On the other hand, taking impressions on cast concretes directly from the etching plates open up new possibilities to experiment with printmaking. Values, norms or rules, Henry Lefebvre, a French Marxist philosopher and sociologist,considered as one of the crucial components of the complex structure called social space. Indian reality is far removed and complex from the west. Here, it is capitalist forces in accordance with traditions, customs, norms of inequality, political institutions, state and religion that determine the value system that affects the formation of a social space.
